Fractional CO2 Laser Scar Reduction

Many people will develop one or more scars in their lifetime. These can appear as a result of injury, surgery or burns. They develop when the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) is damaged. Typically, scars, if left untreated, will be permanent, but now there are non-surgical aesthetic treatments to reduce the appearance of these scars.

There are many types of scars, and everyone's skin reacts differently when damaged. Scarring is a natural part of the skin's healing process, and as new tissue is generated to replace the damaged tissue, new collagen fibres are formed. The new skin will naturally have a different texture from the unscarred skin surrounding the scar, causing a different appearance. When your body produces too much tissue, the injury/incision/burn can turn into a raised scar (also known as a hypertrophic scar or keloid).

How CO2 Laser Helps with Scar Reduction

CO2 laser is highly effective, whether the scars are raised, depressed, or discoloured.

Here is how it works:

 - Collagen Remodelling: The microthermal zones created by the laser trigger a natural wound-healing response. This stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen, which helps smooth and soften the scar tissue over time.

 - Resurfacing Textured Scars: By removing the outermost layer of damaged skin, CO2 lasers promote the growth of healthier, more even skin. This is particularly beneficial for scars with irregular textures or uneven edges.

 - Reducing Pigmentation Irregularities: CO2 lasers can target areas of hyperpigmentation or discolouration around the scar, helping the scar blend more seamlessly with the surrounding skin.

 - Tightening Surrounding Skin: The heat generated by the laser also contracts existing collagen fibres, resulting in tighter, firmer skin around the scar.

 - Minimising Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars: For raised scars, the CO2 laser can reduce the thickness of the scar tissue, flatten the appearance and improve the overall skin contour.

CO2 laser treatments are a clinically proven method for reducing the appearance of scars while improving the overall skin texture and tone. This advanced treatment stimulates the skin's natural healing mechanisms to promote scar remodelling and rejuvenation.

This wavelength is highly absorbed by water, which constitutes a significant portion of human tissue. The interaction between the laser energy and water allows the fractional CO2 laser to precisely vaporise or ablate tissue layers, making it ideal for scar reduction.

The laser creates microscopic columns of ablation while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. As the laser scans across the skin, it penetrates the epidermis (outer layer of the skin), creating micro-wounds that stimulate the natural production of new collagen, elastin and an amazing resurfacing of the outer layer of skin. By removing layers of damaged skin, the Fractional CO2 laser encourages the creation of collagen and reveals smoother, healthier skin.

At Bella Mai, we are committed to providing our clients with the highest quality treatments and outcomes. Our highly skilled professionals have experience performing a variety of CO2 laser cosmetic treatments.

It takes several months for new collagen to be stimulated and to mature, so the skin gets tighter and smoother over a course of 3-6 months.

Every individual is different, and the effectiveness of the treatment will differ from client to client. Unfortunately, we are unable to treat sensitive skin with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis with this treatment.

Some darker Fitzpatrick skin types can also be more challenging to treat because the skin contains more melanin. Melanin in some skin tones is stimulated by trauma to the skin. The Fractional CO2 is an ablative laser that causes controlled skin trauma, aiming to encourage collagen growth. Due to this, it will stimulate pigment and cause pigmentation in some skin tones. Fitzpatrick's V and VI are unsuitable for the treatment.

We do require you to come for a follow-up appointment at 4-6 weeks to see how you are healing. You can contact us at any time before this if you have any questions.

You will need to book a consultation for this treatment before booking the treatment, so we can tailor your plan to your needs. Full aftercare product advice is given with every treatment. Strict adherence to aftercare is a must. You and your therapist will discuss and design a plan that best suits you.
